An outstanding runner at Union-32 High in East Montpelier and the University of Arizona, Chaplin captured high school and collegiate (D-I) championships and was an All-American in high school and college.
As a senior at Arizona, Chaplin won the 2001 NCAA Division I Cross-Country Championship, a sport competed nationwide by over 300 universities, as the Wildcats finished fourth in the NCAA. Chaplin also captured the NCAA West Regional title and was named the NCAA West Regional Athlete of the Year. Chaplin was a two-time Pac-10 champion and a six-time All-American, and the 2001 Pac-10 cross country athlete of the year. She also was the prestigious national Honda Award recipient for cross country in 2001. Chaplin was named to the University of Arizona Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007 as well as the Pac-12 All-Century cross country team in 2015.
Chaplin was the first Arizona freshman to compete in five NCAA championships: cross country running, two indoor and two outdoor T&F, and had the top time of any rookie in the nation in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs.
At U-32, Chaplin was a four-year letter-winner and led the Raiders to three consecutive state cross country championship (1995-97), winning the state D2 individual title in 1996 and 1997. She also helped U-32 win its first outdoors track & field state title in 1996. Chaplin also earned three letters in cross country skiing.
Chaplin was a four-time state high school champion in the outdoor 3,000-meters and places second in the national indoor two-mile championships. She was a four-time all-state selection in track and an All-American in her senior year. In her senior year, her 3,000-meter time of 9:46 was the best in the nation. She set Vermont State high school records in the 1500, 3000 and 3200 events. Those marks are still records in Division II in Vermont.
