Inducted in 2025
First at Rutland High and then at the University of Vermont, Bill Looker was an outstanding three-sport athlete in high school before becoming an all-New England football player for the Catamounts. The speedy Looker set records on the track at both schools.
At Rutland, Looker was one of the state’s top high school football players, and was the state’s top sprinter in 1970 and 1971.
In the regular season on the track, he had a legendary stretch where he won 17 events in the course of three meets to win VSSA Athlete of the Month honors.
At the 1970 and 1971 state championship meets, he won the state titles in five of his six individual sprint events (100-yd, 220-yd and 400-yd dashes) and anchored the 4 X 100 relay champs. In 1970, Looker finished first in the 100 and 440, and finished third in the 220 on a blistering hot day He had to run the 100 and 440 back-to-back, and was drained by the 220 race. The next year he swept the three sprints winning the 100 in 10 seconds flat, the 220 in 22.6 and the 440 in 51.1, all three by large margins. He also anchored the winning sprint relay team that Rutland won by 25 yards. His 100/220/440 sweep was the first in the sprints by an individual in meet history.
In football, he helped lead the Raiders to the 1969 state title (by media vote, before the current VPA playoff format) and he also led the 1971 Vermont Shrine team to a win over New Hampshire. He also was a standout basketball player at Rutland High.
On the collegiate gridiron at UVM Looker was named to the All-New England and All-Yankee Conference first teams in 1974. Despite missing the 1973 season with an injury, he still had 81 career receptions- among the UVM all-time leaders- for 1,253 yards and six touchdowns. He was also the top punter in the Yankee Conference in the early '70s, averaging 36 yards during his career, including 37.5 yards per kick his senior year, and also returned punts and kickoffs for the Catamounts. In 1974 - the last year of football at UVM - Looker won All-ECAC weekly honors three times, hauling in 39 passes, good for 661 yards and four touchdowns.
At UVM in track Looker was a member of UVM's record-setting 440-yard sprint relay team in 1974. That spring, he also finished fifth in the 100-yard run (9.8) at the Yankee Conference championships. Looker was also voted the Vermont Collegiate Invitational Indoor Track and Field Championship's Outstanding Athlete in 1974.
Looker was named to the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987.
